Policy Statement

This event is being organised by a local committee of musicians and jazz fans.

Our aim is to promote jazz on the Isle of Wight. Members of the committee will not receive any financial reward. Inspected accounts will be made available on request.

The committee will cover the cost of the main venues and headline acts. This will be funded by sponsorship, ticket sales and other fund-raising activities.

Any subsequent profits will go towards funding future events.

We will encourage other performances during the period. However, we will not act as agents. It will be the responsibility of the performers and venues to negotiate between themselves.

Photographer's Choice

There are literally hundreds of photographs on our gallery pages, but on this page we have invited our "house" photographers (Walter Halbert, Bob White and Ian Mitchell LRPS) to choose their personal favourites.

Ian Mitchell LRPS

I have been photographing the Newport Jazz Weekend since 2013 and have, literally, thousands of images gathered over the years. This is a small selection of favourites from over the years and I could easily include double, or even triple, this number in this feature.

Gary Plumley and Jim Mullen - 2013
Zoe Rahman One of my earliest pictures, from 2013, featuring local boy Gary Plumley (sax) and Jim Mullen (guitar). I was stood by the side of the stage at the Apollo Theatre and saw the possibility of framing Jim in Gary’s sax. It was then a matter of waiting for the composition to come together. Often imitated, never bettered!
Nikon D200, Nikkor 18-200mm @ 200mm, F6.3, 1/80, ISO 1600.

Dave Green - 2015
Dave Green This dates from 2015 by which time my main camera was now a Fuji X Pro-1. Chosen because of it’s lightness and compactness. Dave was performing as part of a duo in Quay Arts with Gareth Williams on piano but the back line members, although an integral part of any performance, are often overlooked. Musicians need space so by creating space in the image it shows that the part is essential to the whole.
Fuji X Pro-1, Lens @50mm, F6.4, 1/60, ISO 6400.

Aydenne Simone (& Jon Thorne) - 2015
Aydenne Simone & Jon Thorne Also from 2015 This is Aydenne Simone singing Ella with the Keith Ingham Trio. Low light and skin tones provided a challenge so that Aydenne did not get lost against the black backdrop. The best vantage point was on the auditorium stairs where I could fill the frame, with some differential focusing, to include a slightly out of focus, but recognisable, Jon Thorne on bass.
Fuji X Pro-1, Lens @50mm, F6.4, 1/60, ISO 6400.

Robert Fowler - 2016
Robert Fowler This is from 2016 and Robert Fowler’s “Tribute to Gerry Mulligan” at the Apollo Theatre. Gerry was a great baritone player and by getting low down and close I was able to isolate Robert and also emphasise the baritone sax.
Fuji X Pro-1, Lens @95mm, F5, 1/125, ISO 6400.

Liz Fletcher & Alan Barnes 2017
Liz Fletcher & Alan Barnes This is from 2017 and I first became aware of Liz when I lived in west London and she was a regular performer at the Ealing Jazz Festival. Since then she has collaborated with Alan Barnes on a couple of superb cds so I was really pleased when Jim booked them both for 2017 at Quay Arts. It was a matter of knowing I would get a glance in my direction together with a smile and being ready to get the shot.
Fuji X Pro-1, Lens @55mm, F6.4, 1/60, ISO 6400.

Derek Nash & Gary Plumley 2017
Derek Nash & Gary Plumley Gary Plumley again but here appearing with an ensemble known as the Alley Cats at Quay Arts with his Sax Appeal leader Derek Nash as guest. Derek is not known for standing still so it is a matter of watching to see what he is doing and then anticipating. Here I was backstage and Gary (on the right) was rim lit and fairly static so I could pre-focus on Gary and wait until Derek (on the left) moved into the same plane of focus. This is straight out of camera with no manipulation!
Fuji X Pro-1, Lens @104.9mm, F6.4, 1/125, ISO 6400.

Walter Halbert

Starting with Zoe Rahman - Quay Arts - 2nd June 2012 Zoe Rahman I particularly like Zoe’s concentration, sincerity in her performance and striking looks.
Camera: X-Pro1, Lens 55-200, ISO 6400, Focal L 200mm

NJW favourite Alan Barnes, here performing with Dave Newton at the Quay Arts Café. 4th June 2017
Alan Barnes I like the fact that Alan (as usual) has just cracked a joke with the audience before assuming his professional performance
Camera: X-Pro1, Lens 55-200, ISO 2500, Focal L 200mm

Derek Nash Quintet featuring Geoff Gascoyne (bass) & Seb de Krom (drums) Apollo Theatre - 3rd June 2017
Derek Nash, Geoff Gascoyne and Seb de Krom I find Derek’s amazing contortions and expressions during his performances irresistible to photograph.
Camera: X-Pro1, Lens 55-200, ISO 1600, Focal L 86mm

Liane Carroll Trio with Roger Carey (bass) Apollo Theatre - 4th June 2017
Liane Carroll with Roger Carey I found the exuberance of Carroll charming and here she even amazed her husband, great performer

NYJO trumpet section rehearsals Medina Theatre - 4th June 2017
National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO) This rehearsal of the trumpet section I found particularly extraordinary due to the commitment and complete conviction of the musicians in their ability
