ISLAND MP Andrew Turner and some of the top names in British Jazz were at Waterstones, Newport last night (Thursday, July 18) to officially launch the second Newport Jazz Weekend.
Guests enjoyed a buffet before the weekend was officially opened by the weekend's resident artist for this year, sax player Alan Barnes.
Top names at this year's event include cornet player, Digby Fairweather, pianists Keith Ingham and David Newton and the Island's own Gary Plumley who will be playing with sax ensemble Sax Appeal.

More favourites for jazz weekend
NEWPORT Jazz Weekend has announced Aydenne Simone as the latest addition for the Newport Jazz Weekend next month.
The event runs from July 19 to 21, bringing together many top UK names in jazz to perform at different venues, including Quay Arts and Apollo Theatre.
London-based vocalist Aydenne will team up with the Keith Ingham Trio, on July 20, at the CP sponsored event.
Georgia Mancio, who earned a standing ovation for her performance at the Apollo Theatre last year, will perform on Sunday, July 21, as part of her current UK tour, alongside guitarist Nigel Price and bassist Julie Walkington.
Also playing will be Zoe Francis, on Friday, July 19, with jazz legends Alan Barnes and David Newton.

Big jazz weekend lined up
THE final line-up for Newport Jazz Weekend has been announced this week, with the cream of Britain's jazz musicians set to take part.
Guitarist Martin Taylor, saxophone band Sax Appeal and pianist David Newton are a few of the stars who will appear at the weekend, which takes place at venues across Newport between July 19 and July 21.
The event kicks off on Friday, July 19, at Quay Arts at a concert dubbed 'The best of British Jazz Legends', featuring pianist Keith Ingham with Digby Fairweather on cornet, Roy Williams on trombone and Dave Shepherd on clarinet.
And on Sunday, July 21, the event reaches its climax at The Riverside Centre, when saxophonist Alan Barnes will be joined by guitarist Martin Taylor for what promises to be a sell-out event.

The Best of British Jazz Legends, Quay Arts, 5.15pm to 7pm;

Saturday, July 20:
Tribute to George Shearing, Apollo Theatre, Newport, 1.30pm to 3.15pm;
Keith Ingham Trio, Quay Arts, 3.45pm to 5pm;
Jim Mullen (guitar), Gary Plumley (tenor sax), Craig Milverton (organ) and Matt Home (drums), Apollo Theatre, 5.30pm to 7pm;
and Alan Barnes (tenor sax), Bruce Adams (trumpet), David Newton (piano), Sandy Suchodolski (bass), and Nick Millward (drums), Newport Minster 8.15 to 10pm.
Sunday, July 21:

Sax player Alan is jazz event resident
Policy Statement
This event is being organised by a local committee of musicians and jazz fans.Our aim is to promote jazz on the Isle of Wight. Members of the committee will not receive any financial reward. Audited accounts will be made available after the event.
The committee will cover the cost of the main venues and headline acts. This will be funded by sponsorship, ticket sales and other fund-raising activities.
Any subsequent profits will go towards funding future events and a donation to charity (IW Mountbatten Hospice).
We will encourage other performances during the period. However, we will not act as agents. It will be the responsibility of the performers and venues to negotiate between themselves.

THE line-up for next year's Newport Jazz Weekend is taking shape as organisers look to top the success of last July's inaugural concerts.
Top sax player, Alan Barnes, well known as one of the country’s leading jazz musicians, has been confirmed as resident artist.
Alan recently won the alto saxophone, clarinet and baritone saxophone categories in the British Jazz Awards.
He will team up with trumpeter, Bruce Adams, and top pianist, David Newton, as well as up-and-coming vocalist, Zoe Francis, among others.
World famous guitarist Martin Taylor will be backafter his sellout performance last year.
Also returning will be award-winning vocalist, Georgia Mancio, and New York-based pianist, Keith Ingham.
There are also many new names to the Island, including highly respected pianist, Craig Milverton, and guitarists, Nigel Price and Jim Mullen.
Among Island musicians appearing is sax player, Gary Plumley, with the eight-piece sax ensemble, Sax Appeal. The line-up is provisionally set to include 13 musicians shortlisted in the British Jazz Awards 2012.
There will also be jam sessions, workshops and jazz education.

The non-profit event, on July 19 to 21, will be run by volunteer musicians and jazz enthusiasts.
Jim said the feedback from 2112 was excellent and it was hoped Newport Jazz Weekend would secure a place on the UK jazz scene as a popular annual event.
