Andy Urquart & Gary Plumley Latin Sextet

28 May 2015

The Band

Andy Urquart - trumpet
Gary Plumley - sax and flute
Jim Thorn - piano
Jon Thorne - bass
Ken Black - drums
Jose Lito - percussion

A fully sold out Apollo Theatre hosted the first concert of the 4th Newport Jazz Weekend. With event director Jim Thorn leading the backing band on on piano the combo led by Andy Urquart on trumpet and Gary Plumley on tenor sax took the audience through a set of standards adding their own unique latin feel.

Andy Urquartcan be otherwise found leading the house band at the Jazz Café in Sandbanks and over a long career has worked with many of the top names in British jazz. Gary Plumley is no stranger to island audiences and since his first professional gig touring with The Rocky Horror Show he has also played with all the British jazz greats but can sometimes be found playing a gig at a small island venue as, quite simply, he loves to play.

With Jose Lito providing his unique latin vibes on percussion and the solid rhythm section of Jon Thorne on bass and Ken Black on drums the audience were treated to a great first evening of musical enjoyment for what turned out to be a greatly successful weekend.
